Types of Arthritis in the Knee and Concerns on PainPain seems to have become corollary with arthritis. Anyone with this condition would tell you that. Whether it's dull, stingy or whatever type of pain they feel, patients cumulatively face the same truth- they will suffer much if their condition is not properly unattended to. The knee is often the target of inflammation, swelling and thus, pain. There are basically three types of arthritis that are commonly recorded affecting the knees. One is the osteoarthritis, which is the most common among the three. This type is a degenerative type which more or less eats the cartilage of the bones until eventual loss occurs. The cause is normally related to aging and it affects practically all weight-bearing joints. Due to repetitive use, the joints irritate the cartilage which then causes the swelling and the pain. Through the process, the cartilage would degenerate and flake, giving fewer cushions and more friction on both joints. Because of the nature of deterioration, osteoarthritis involves all the nearby muscles, bones and joints which lead to further damages. This also causes the pain. The second type of arthritis in the knee is the rheumatoid arthritis. This is actually an autoimmune disease that results to chronic inflammation of the knee joints. Autoimmune diseases are the products when the tissues are mistakenly attacked by its own immune system. In effect, patients with autoimmune diseases such as that of the rheumatoid arthritis have antibodies that attack their own body tissues which could produce inflammation. Due to the possibility that it could affect other body systems as well, which by the way is also termed to as systemic illness, it is also called as rheumatoid disease. Since rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease, there are intense possibilities that it could lie dormant for years yet could trigger any symptom at any time. However, this still does not negate the fact that it could cause functional disability and potential permanent damages on the joints. The third type is the post-traumatic arthritis. It follows an almost the same process of development like that of the osteoarthritis. It develops form any significant fracture from the knee or ligament and meniscus tear could trigger the development of this condition. These supporting structures could contribute to the instability of the joints and increased stress could eventually lead to arthritis. For the most cases, the pain that develops in knee arthritis develops gradually, however abrupt onset is also possible. The joint may start to stiffen or become swollen which makes movement pretty hard, sometimes almost impossible. This pain could also lead to total weakness of the joints which is known as buckling or locking. In the early stages of arthritis knee pain, the treatment is conservative and relatively non-invasive. These include measures such as use of medications, lifestyle modifications, use of support devices, exercises, and other simple measures such as heat or cold compress, elastic bandages and liniments. On the more serious stages however, patients are often advised of surgical operations on the knee. This is when it gets to the point that everything else is no longer effective. Surgery will provide the last resort and among the many options are the following: osteotomy, arthroplasty, arthroscopic surgery and cartilage grafting. Researchers are continuing to find more information on the nature of diseases with regards to arthritis knee pain. And even as we speak, people are looking for ways to relieve people from the pain caused by this disease. Comments |
