What You Should Know About Arthritis Foot Pain
There are basically two types of arthritis that is often seen as the causes of arthritis foot pain namely the rheumatoid arthritis and the osteoarthritis. One certainly differs from another in both nature of disease and kinds of treatments to be used.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease which is characterized by the attacks of the immune system cells against their own tissues. This causes the inflammation of the tissues around the joints as well as the internal organs. Because rheumatoid arthritis in the foot is chronic, patients are likely to suffer with it for long years unless effective and long term cure is used. It is also likely that the disease could lay dormant for long periods without giving any signs of the existence of the disease. However attacks of foot pain may surface at any given time.

But the medical community deems it not enough to give the systemic nature of the disease to cause the rheumatoid arthritis in the foot to be the sole culprit. Meanwhile the other potential cause of arthritis foot pain is the osteoarthritis. This type is a degenerative disease that gradually consumes the cartilage of the joints until marked loss occurs. On the onset of cartilage deterioration, the joints are likely to develop symptoms that would permit the body from movements.
Given the two forms of arthritis that affect the foot, it is now easier to identify the signs and symptoms of arthritis foot pain. They are a follows:
- Stiffness of the joints found in the foot
- Swelling of the part nearest to the joint or directly the joint itself
- Difficulty bending the affected part/s
- Difficulty of movement
- Intense, dull, stinging pain around the affected area
The causes of arthritis foot pain vary depending on the type of arthritis affecting your joints. But the general cases that could be observed are the following:
Deterioration of the joint due to repetitive use- This is normally the cause which reflects old age. Due to daily use, the cartilage that cushions the connecting joints gets thinner, thus the bones will lose their protective covering which may lead to rubbing between both bones that causes the inflammation.
Injury- This is also pointed as one of the culprits. Any traumatic occurrence on the foot such as jamming of the toe, dropping something on this area, fracture or any injury could result to arthritis foot pain.
Abnormality of the foot mechanics- Sometimes people with abnormal feet such as those having arched feet or flat feet are more prone to developing arthritis.
